What owners report
I was stopped at a red light. A Buick SUV traveling at an admitted 65mph rear ended me and pushed my car into the car in front of me. My seatbelt was on. My head hit the steering wheel resulting in a massive brain bleed. I have ruptured and herniated disks and severe whiplash as well as a fractured skull. My airbag did not deploy although My car was announcing a loud message over the speakers "we have alerted emergency services". I can't find a lawyer to take the case because there hasn't been a recall on this year yet. It was a 2020 Mini Cooper S.
A driver drove head on into my drivers seat door hard enough that his front bumper completely detached from his car and my door could not open, close, or lock, and my car was not drivable. My car has side airbags. No airbag deployed. I had to go to the hospital immediately after the accident. There is no open recall on my 2020 Mini 2 door hardtop. Shouldn't an airbag have deployed?
Driver left the roadway to the outside of a curve to the left, sideswiping a telephone pole and spinning at least one time back onto and off the roadway again before coming to rest. Impact to the passenger front wheel, and entire passenger side, without impacting front or rear end of the vehicle. C pillars deployed, as well as seatbelt pretensioner. Impact was at 55+ mph. No air bags deployed. Dash now indicates fault or error in air bags.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 Mini Cooper. The contact called on behalf of his wife and stated that while driving at 20 MPH, the contact crashed into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy but the contact mentioned that the other vehicles air bags deployed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained back and neck aches that needed medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a salvaged yard waiting to be diagnosed by the insurance company. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic test or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The "Passenger Airbag Off" light is illuminated, meaning the primary safety restraint system is disabled. The failed component is the "Occupancy Classification System (OCS) / OC3 Sensor Mat." I purchased a very well-maintained 2014 MINI in March 2026 and the failure occurred shortly after the 10-year warranty window expired. BMW Group has similar BMW models using the very same technology, and they received 15-year extensions, not 10. BMW Coverage: Has extended the warranty for the OC3 mat to 15 years/Unlimited miles for specific "eligible US-specification" models like the 3 Series, 5 Series, and Z4. MINI Coverage: Currently caps the warranty extension at 10 years/120,000 miles for its eligible vehicles.
My car was parked and I went to start it up in the morning to go to work. A light came on which looked like an airbag/seatbelt light. In my vehicle it was not one of the regular service lights that they have highlighted in the manual so I called the dealership that afternoon. They made an appointment for me to bring my car in to be checked out on 4/5/16 which I did. Before I got the car to the dealership the light had turned off but I took it in anyway. They said they would check it out and get back to me. The next day they called me to tell me that it was an airbag issue and they had to special order the parts from Germany which would be in on 4/22/16. Later that month they called me back and asked me to bring the loaner car they had supplied to me back because the parts were not available and being backordered nationally. …
The contact owns a 2013 Mini Cooper. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the passenger's side seat occupancy sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 106,000.
There have been at least 7 write-ups about air bag failure on this model reported to you. When a passenger sits in the seat of my car, with the seat belt on, 01 the airbag light and seat belt light come on. If I have an accident the airbag on the passenger side will not deploy, leading to death or injury to the passenger. This has been reported to a MINI dealership. They will inspect it at my cost to see if it rates as a safety item. It is available for inspection as I can't drive it with a passenger and I can't leave my disabled wife alone at home. The car has 92323 miles on it. [redacted]--- [redacted]
