What owners report
I purchased my 2017 Lincoln MKZ Select on November 11, 2024. The vehicle was determined to need a new engine, per Murgado Lincoln of Chicago. They had my car for over 48 days while putting in a new engine. After this was completed the car had to be sent back due to a mistake the mechanics made by not attaching a gasket properly. After this, I began experiencing odd noises underneath the hood and throughout the vehicle; delayed timing belt in both acceleration and deceleration, and so forth. I was then involved in a hit-and-run car accident (not my fault). All side airbags deployed and my passenger side rear wheel is destroyed. I had this car assessed just a few days ago by a certified Auto Care Company who said I needed a completely new transmission and that this car is not street legal at the moment... insurance is not helping me at all.
I was stationary behind a car turning left on hwy 154 s in coweta co, ga, when I was hit from behind by another automobile going approximately 50+ MPH. The driver who hit me never applied his brakes, which pushed my car into the SUV in front of me. The car I was pushed into was shoved 30+ yards down the road. My airbags did not deploy and my driver's side seat broke.
Tl* the contact owned a 2016 Lincoln MKZ. While driving approximately 40 MPH, the contact's vehicle rear ended another vehicle that stopped abruptly. The air bags deployed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a body shop. The dealer was contacted (sherwood automotive, salisbury, md, 410-548-46), but did not assist. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact received a Takata settlement notice. The VIN was not provided. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.
A vehicle stopped suddenly in front of me because a car did the same in front of them. I braked suddenly but it felt like my vehicle was being pushed from behind, my steering wheel air bags deployed so did the sides. The air bags deployed before the impact blinding me as I rear ended the car in front. I suffered burns, bruises, neck injuries and lower back pain. I was driving no more than 25-30 miles per hour. My car was a total lost and I had owned it for less than a year.
In the middle of June 2024 (about [redacted]), my wife was driving her car, and pressed the horn button to warn a driver who had pulled out right in front of her. The horn failed to sound, and has not worked since then when pursuing the horn button. The horns themselves do sound when pressing the key fob to locate the car. Pressing the horn button has never worked since the time of this report, and several instances have occurred with other drivers needing to be forewarned of hazards. The problem has been verified by the husband, but not yet by the dealer, police or insurance representative. Sincerely, [redacted]
4 times since car was brand new I have had to contact dealer and corporate Lincoln about the same very dangerous reoccurring problem. They continue to not be able to fix. The problem happening, and again today is that the airbag warning light goes on and the air conditioning stops working and the power windows won't open on passenger side and the radio won't go on and power drivers seat move back and forth on its own while driving!!!! Problems happen both while driving and in stationary position. This has happened since approximately July 2015 through today August 2017. Dealer and Lincoln are becoming less and less amicable in helping us get the car repaired and provide loaner vehicle even though it is under full warranty with only 23000 miles on it.
The contact owned a 2014 Lincoln MKZ. The contact stated that while idle at a stop sign, a nearby aggressive driver had lost control attempting to pass another nearby vehicle; however, lost control and T-boned the front Driver-side door. No warning lights illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the impact of the crash was approximately 40 MPH; however, the air bags did not deploy, but had deployed for the vehicle that caused the crash. Medical attention was sought for hip and neck pain. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a local Tow yard via the local Police Department, where it remains for further investigation. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 124,000.
Notified by Lincoln (Ford motor company) about NHTSA 14v-597 recall in letter dated November 2014 concerning the air bag control module failure. As of May 1st, my vehicle still has not been repaired. Although I have made numerous call to Lincoln (Ford), I am told that repair parts are not available for my vehicle. I have bee waiting 6 months for repair parts for my vehicle. I find this to be unacceptable as a consumer and hence my filing this complaint with the NHTSA.

NHTSA investigations
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
