What 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar owners say
Engine & cooling
At approximately 39,000 miles, my 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar developed a coolant leak from the front lower crossover in the engine valley. A repair facility confirmed the issue and recommended replacement of the front upper and lower crossovers, water pump, and hoses. The repair estimate is $2,727. This problem is a known defect in other Jaguar Land Rover vehicles (crossover/elbow coolant leaks) that were subject to recalls and lawsuits, but my VIN is not currently included. The defect creates a serious safety risk: coolant leaks can cause sudden engine overheating, loss of power, or engine failure while driving, putting occupants and other drivers at risk. The issue has been diagnosed and confirmed by a service center. Prior to the diagnosis, I observed low coolant levels and warning messages. …
Engine seized (failed) just under 90k miles. I bought this car used in 2021 with only 7k miles on the vehicle and I've had it serviced as recommended by the manufacturer. The engine failed without warning and left me owing $23k on a useless vehicle. The manufacturers warranty was expired, so I'm left holding the bag and paying for a useless vehicle to remain in my garage until the loan is paid off in another 3-years.
Electrical system
The Telematics Control Unit (TCU) short-circuited internally while the vehicle was parked, draining the battery and leaving the vehicle completely immobilized. It would not start and had to be towed to an authorized Land Rover dealer. The dealer's diagnosis (RO 645537, JLR Technical Assistance case TA 4202195) found the TCU offline, the main battery tested good, and fuse RF20 blown. The replacement fuse also blew. Power and ground checks confirmed the TCU was internally shorted. The TCU (part LR091250) was replaced at a cost of $3,041.24. Before the failure, the infotainment system had persistent navigation and Bluetooth faults. Land Rover issued a software over-the-air update for the problem, which repeatedly failed to install. Land Rover advised a manual software update at the dealer, but the TCU failed before that appointment. …
"My 2020 Range Rover Velar (VIN: [redacted], 68,424 miles) has an electronic rotary gear selector showing signs of failure consistent with a widely reported defect in this vehicle line. The shift-by-wire module uses an internal circuit board known for weak solder joints, causing the dial to become stuck and unable to select or exit a gear (fault code P176C-11 in some cases). This is documented across multiple Land Rover/Range Rover models (2013-2023 Range Rover, 2018-2023 Velar, 2017-2023 Discovery). If a vehicle becomes stuck in Drive or Park unexpectedly, it poses a real safety risk, especially since this is a shift-by-wire system with no mechanical backup linkage. No recall currently covers this specific failure mode, despite it being common enough that it supports a thriving specialist repair/rebuild industry. I am filing this complaint to document the pattern for NHTSA's records."
