What owners report

I have a 2003 Jeep grand cherokee and am having periodic unintended accelerations... No accidents, but close... And I have verified in each case that my foot was nowhere near the accelerator and firmly on the brake pedal only... The period between episodes is shortening, there was probably a year between the first and second, and only 3 weeks between occurance 4 and 5... (the last time is noted as the incident date) interestingly yesterday the engine warning light came on and I had a local Dodge mechanic look at the vehicle, he noted that the computer code indicated the tps was failing..since the Jeep dealer was closed, I asked him if it was safe to drive, and he warned me to brake well in advance of any intended stop as the sensor might not read correctly and would try to overcome the braking... …

Customer has a 2003 Jeep gc Laredo. Constant complaint of low brake pedal. Replaced pads (appx 1/2 wear left) rotors true and with in normal limits. Caliper slides free and no evidence of foreign oils on rotors. No air in the brake lines. Adjustment with in normal limits. Customer experiences low pedal 2/3 to the floor before resistance. On loose gravel ABS system activates prior to vehicle slowing. Speeds does not matter however, speed must be greater that 20mph for ABS to activate. No codes are present on the computer. Customer reports she has been having this problem for "as long as she can remember".

Dt: 04-29-04 while driving through a parking lot, prior to that had been to a flower nursey where a lot of dirt and gravel were on ground and then to a shopping center. Driving a slow speed approaching stop sign, regular weight in vehicle. Applied brake pressure which seemed to grip and then started to slow and then lost function on brakes. Applied steady pressure to try to stop before the intersection, approximately 15 feet from the interesection took foot off brake which was pressed to floor which seemed as if they were responding but only for a few seconds which ceased to work despite continous pressure. No brakes whatsoever. Removed foot immediately and then pushed down hard to engage ABS. Felt or heard nothing. At that point, steering was under control but car was not stoping. Was in straightway struck another vehicle which was speeding through. …

Since I bought the vehicle, the brakes have not been "right". I took it in a few times to be told nothing was wrong. I was in 2 accidents, where the vehicle would not stop, and rear ended each vehicle. When I braked at speeds over 50 MPH, the front of the vehicle shook. In aug. 04, I called the dealer again to complain, and was told the brakes are not under warranty (2002 grand cherokee Laredo - 26000 mi) I finally took it to my private mechanic, who told me that he has replaced numerous brakes on this model - they seem to be out of alignment from the start. My insurance company dropped me - too many of the same accidents in the last 2 years, and am now paying high rates, as a result.

The 2001 Jeep, which has 56,000 miles has had the front rotors replaced three times, and the calipers once. The service technician agreed that there wa s something wrong, but they hinted about our driving habits. You know this can happen when you drive a lot in the mountains. We purchased it in denver, close to the mountains. However we live on the eastern plains, and we have never towed anything, but we have the towing package. This last time we had the front rotors replaced, and it turns out that the pads were finally wore on the rear. It is amazing that the life of the pads is three times that rotor. I know that brakes are wearable items, but replacing the rotors before the pads is like buying three sets of wheels before the tires wear out. I called daimler Chrysler, and I simply wanted some advice, but the lady hung up on me. …

When braking at speeds of approximately 30-35 MPH and above, there is a very noticeable pulsating, shaking sensation from the front end. I first noticed this at about 12,000 miles. Chrysler replaced the front brake pads, calipers, and rotors with an upgrade kit--a kit specifically assembled for this problem. The service rep at the Chrysler dealership told me that this has been a problem because as the jeeps had become larger and heavier, the braking system had not been redesigned to handle the added weight. The upgrade kit worked a little longer than the original parts, but now at 29,000 miles--only 17,000 miles later--I am experiencing the same failure again. The Chrysler dealership has verified that the rotors are warped again and need to be turned or replaced yet one more time. …

Both my 21 year old daughter & myself have experienced loss of brakes on several occasions with my 2000 Jeep grand cherokee Laredo, beginning in 2003. The problem occurs mostly in bad weather(mainly snowy conditions). When stopping is attempted, the car pulsates wildly (coming from the brake pedal), and you just skid out. We both have been lucky enough to avoid collision so far, due to lack of other traffic or by swerving into another lane, etc. The car dealership says its due to worn rotors, which we have now replaced 3 times: once in March of 2003 at 10,872 miles, once in July of 2004 at 23,721 miles and now in December 2005, at 33,081 miles. The first 2 times Jeep paid for the replacement, the 3rd they refused. The service dept. Is aware of the problem, they said they have numerous complaints, even with their own vehicles...Jeep refuses to address the situation. …

I bought my wife a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee, and it has shut off while she was driving, putting her in a very dangerous situation, with no "check engine" light...nothing, low coolant light came on when there is coolant already in the car, check gauges light keep coming on, heater doesn't heat well, the passenger side power door lock does not work, I've replaced the thermostat and the water pump once. And I've had an issue with the vehicle overheating and the fan not coming on and had it replaced. I do believe there is something wrong with the Jeep cherokee especially the 2000 model and think it should be recalled. I looked on the internet for blogs to see if anyone else was having the same problems and found there were well over 100 people on one website with the same exact problems. …
