What owners report

On two separate occasions in 2006 and 2007, OEM continental touring tires 225/45r17 on my 2006 Jaguar x-Type sport sedan suffered spontaneous, catastrophic blow out failure under what should have been nominal operating conditions. {I-95, I-495, clear dry pavement, speed below 80 MPH]. Since those events, remaining tires have exhibited sidewall bulging and other evidence of cord separation. Today (12/26/2008) while visiting safety website, learned of at least 50 similar spontaneous failures of same product, which is also oe tire on Mercedes c300 and BMW 3 series sedans. This seems to be more than coincidence.

During routine inspection while washing our sedan, tire and wheel damage was noted on passenger-side: front tire has a blister and two cuts where tire meets wheel, wheel is nicked in several places. Rear tire has one small cut where tire meets wheel and wheel is nicked in several places. No loss of air pressure occurred. These low profile tires appear suspectible to minor impact damage from road potholes. We cannot locate an identical replacement tire from area dealers.

The tire in question, drivers side front, without notice completely deflated causing the vehicle to go out of control at approximately 50 MPH, spin out, go through the median and into the opposite lane. In summer of 2007, took 2003 x-Type to repair shop. All four tires had slits in the side walls wide enough to insert dimes and have them stay there. Repair shop replaced tires and said rim too large, tire sidewall too small for weight of car. Replaced tires at cost, because I am long time customer. On 9/9/07 had spontaneously sidewall blowout on driver rear tire on I-695 in baltimore on I-95 exit ramp. Sidewall had a hole 3 inches in diameter. I had to drive to rest area. Repair shop owner said he would sell car if he were me or replace rims with smaller ones. Said tire too badly too damaged by driving after blowout to get replacement.
