Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1995 GMC Sierra owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The driver side seat back collapsed backwards while vehicle was in motion. The driver grabbed steering wheel to avoid falling backwards and crashed into a gravel pit as a result. The knobs that control the seat have been frozen and inoperable for three years. The driver's seat wouldn't latch and slid back several times while the vehicle was being driven.
Dt*: the contact stated while sitting in the driver's seat it moves freely. An independent repair shop determined that the seat frame is breaking away from the floor board and needs to be replaced. Updated 3/9/2006 -
The lower seat frame for the drivers seat in my 1995 GMC Sierra 4 wd 1/2 ton pickup has broken during acceleration into traffic. This breakage allows the seatback to rotate backward and to the right tilting the driver back and obscuring view of the highway. This was repaired once in 1996 under waranty. Then repaired again at my cost in 2000 and has broken again today. Each time this failure has occured the truck was being accelerated into traffic flow. This vehicle, although designed for off road usage has only been used on city streets. This seat failure is not a fun situation to experience and loss of control of the vehicle is very likely. I am 6'4" tall and seat position May have some influence on the failure due to the seat sets behind the base that mounts it to the floor. I personally have been told by other owners that this is not unique to my personal truck. The mfg. …
The seat metal cracked on both sides on front of seat, sometimes the edges catch on each other and then suddenly releases when motion is started. This happened at a traffic light and found myself looking at the headliner of the truck (the shoulder belt keeps you from going forward, not backwards) the seat back keeps you from going backwards. What happens is the lower seat cushion tilts up towards the steering wheel which in turn can pull the feet off the controls and at the same time the chest and head goes backwards, this could cause a loss of control especially if the hands slip off the steering. I saw that there was an investigation into this, but no recall. I will contact the dealer again to see if they have a solution for this.
The left front seat anchor broke while driving. When it gave away the seat leaned back more thatn usual. If both anchor in the front had broke at the same time the seat more than likely would have fell backwards due to my weight in the seat. During a discussion with a local Chevrolet service rep my wife was told that they have had some problems with the seat frames in this vehicle. If there truely is a problem of this nature someone other than the manufacturer should probably be looking into it.
Passenger seat would not lock into track, allowing it to slide forward intermittently, then regularly upon braking. This caused the passenger discomfort from the force of their weight and the seat pulling against the seat and shoulder belts. Service technician reported a lage number of similar failures and replacements. Said since it was a safety issue they could not attempt to diagnose and repair, they had to replace the entire assembly. Cost: $238.78 .
Failure with driver's seat (captains chair) had problem for years , GMC stated I would have to purchase new seat, but to expensive to replace. The seat is loose and moves from side to side making it dangerous to drive and has no back support. I have contacted the company again. Hope you can help. Please we need your advice. This is not a wear and tear problem, it is a manufactor defect.
Consumer was putting a wallet in his back pocket while sitting in the driver seat and all of sudden the high seatback broke off into the rear. Today while his wife was leaning in the passenger side seat and it broke off into a reclining position. Contacted the dealer.
Driver's side seat broke from the tracks, causing the consumer to rock. This was the fourth time that driver's seat broke from the tracks. Also, passenger's side seat broke on June 21, 1999. Dealer is aware of the problem, and can't determine the cause.
The front passenger seat does not roll forward at times. It does not lock in place at times either. It has been "fixed" a total of 18 times. The blower fan has also been "fixed" a total of 8 times. It, too, does not work properly all the time.
