Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the wheels locked up as if the contact had depressed the brake pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated to approximately 20 MPH and he observed that the "Service Advancetrac" and the check engine warning lights had illuminated. The contact stated that other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over and stopped. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle however, the "Service Advancetrac" and check engine lights remained illuminated. The contact stated that he drove the vehicle off the highway however, while driving the vehicle would not accelerate above 35 MPH. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was unintentionally accelerating while depressing the brake pedal. …
As I was driving along the highway the vehicle suddenly lost all propulsion. The electric shifter indicated the vehicle was no longer in drive and several errors/warnings appeared on the dash including "Pre-collision assist not available, Powertrain Malfunction/reduced power, and service engine soon". No error messages were visible prior to this occurring. The vehicle can be made available upon request. It is currently at the dealer for the second time for this issue in the last 3 days. Both times the vehicle was rendered unusable in high speed/highway traffIc, putting both myself and fellow motorists at risk by forcing me to coast through a line of cars to reach the shoulder. Also, being on the side of the highway as cars fail to move over for the disabled vehicle poses its own risk to my safety as well as other motorists. …
I was driving on a divided secondary road and my truck when into reduced power mode, displaying " Powertrain malfunction/Reduced power, engine service soon, and precollision assistance not available". This ended up slowing me rapidly from 55 down to under 30 +/- MPH. When it was necessary to stop at a light and I took my foot off the accelerator, the truck did not immediately slow but actually surged forward. After 'crawling' home, I had it flat-bedded to a dealership that day, and it took them almost 2 weeks and multiple test drives to tell me that that cannot recreate this issue. I was told by the service advisor that there was an issue and that could see it in the vehicles history. I went to the dealership and asked them how long they would keep testing it if they were not able to replicate the problems. They said 'it was up to me'. I took the vehicle home. …
Approximately around [redacted] a.m, [redacted], I was on my way to on the [redacted] . I was going driving around 75-78 mph when all of sudden my 2023 Maverick drop in speed and power suddenly. I looked at my dashboard and saw mph dropped to around 50. I had no knowledge of what was taking place at the time. I tried to press my acceleration pedal and the mph still was dropping, so I managed to get over to the far right lane so I could get to the shoulder. During this event several warning lights flashed, such as check engine soon, crash assist not available, power train malfunction ect. I turned the vehicle off and back on - it still had the same messages- I managed to drive the 5-10miles I had left on my route to work @ 33mph. Once at safe location I contacted a tow truck to haul my vehicle to Hennessey Ford for diagnostic and answers. …
AUTOMATIC REVVING INCIDENT 1 DATE: November 25, 2025 TIME: about 4:05pm LOCATION: [redacted] WEATHER: Slight rain, around 37 F VEHICLE STATUS: In Park, heat dial turned on. DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE: Turned key to on position while in park. ICE engine immediately turned on and revved all the way, as if the accelerator pedal was pressed down all the way. Pedal was NOT under floor mats. Immediately turned key to off position, let sit for a moment. Turned key to on position again and issue seemed to be resolved. No check engine lights or other codes were showing on the dash cluster. AUTOMATIC REVVING INCIDENT 2 & 3 DATE: December 2, 2025 TIME: about 4:05pm LOCATION: [redacted] WEATHER: Clear, around 27 F VEHICLE STATUS: In drive, heat dial turned on. I was driving around in city traffic and all of the sudden a message popped up on my screen that said "gear will engage at lower speed" and lost all power. I coasted into the nearest parking lot and it slammed me to a stop when i got slow enough and put the parking brake on. It then thew a bunch of codes saying service soon, something regarding advancetrak, and the check engine light came on. I then turned the car off and back on which made only the check engine light come on so i tried to at least make it home and i accelerated to 20mph and lost power again. threw the same codes at me too. At that point i got into another parking lot and it got towed to mcree. I believe what the cause was a ford guy came by the house a week ago to do a recall and reprogrammed the computer system. I read online that a guy had the recall done a week ago and the same thing happened to him. …
SECOND REPORT SAME PROBLEM: See NHTSA tracking Number 11583215, 04/16/2024. Took to dealer (Autonation Ford, Frisco, Texas) and they kept vehicle four (4) days. Upon return they told me diagnostics showed no alerts on vehicle, thus no problems. So, nothing was done. 05/26/2024 approx. 8:05pm, traveling 50-mph had sudden loss of power and speed. Warning lights and prompts appeared on cluster. Vehicle slowed immediately to 35-40mph and would not accelerate any faster. Sudden slowdown caused vehicle behind (who was following to close) to suddenly brake, almost hitting me. Would slow when brakes applied. When brakes released vehicle would accelerate to 35-40 mph on its own without applying gas pedal. This vehicle has had four (4) recalls, and now two separate incidents as described above. …
This morning I was driving to work (65mph cruise control, 45 degrees F outside, heated seats ON), out of nowhere I felt myself slowing down right after I went over a railroad track (pretty decent bump) on the highway. As I was slowing down I noticed that my cruise control had turned itself off and when trying to turn it back on (pressing set+, set-, and the toggle CC on/off button) it wasn't responding. After realizing that setting my cruise control wasn't working I tried accelerating on my gas pedal but nothing was happening and I was still slowing down. I tried again and noticed that when I accelerated, the needle on the left side gauge wasn't going past the green battery section even when accelerating harder than normal. Everything in the vehicle seemed to be working properly as far as power steering, lights, breaking, dashboard, etc. …
When driving down the road at approximately 35-40mph, the accelerator pedal stopped working and a variety of warning messages and lights popped up on the dash. Some of those messages included "gear selected will engage at low speed", "powertrain system fault", and "pre-collision assist not available". Because the vehicle suddenly became undriveable, it rolled to a stop in the middle of the road. After coming to a stop, I put it in park (I may have restarted the vehicle, but am not entirely sure) and I was able to get the vehicle off the road, albeit with reduced power. Warning messages and lights (check engine, wrench) remained on the dashboard. There were no warning signs prior to this happening The vehicle was towed to a local Ford dealership and has been there for 13 days. I have not heard from them about identifying the problem. …
11 May 2024, I had started my truck as normal and began driving. About 2 miles from my house I lost all power to the truck. I was driving about 35 MPH when the truck threw up errors on the screen and I could no longer accelerate. It threw on the E Brake abruptly. Luckily no one was behind me as such an abrupt stop could cause a deadly accident. After I shut off the truck and waited 5 minutes and started the truck back up but it had a check engine light. I follow a forum called "ford maverick truck club" where I was made aware of this issue happening to maverick owners after a recall for the tail light. I had this recall preformed. I drove to a fort dealership where they attempted to fix the issue but said there was no remedy and only cleared the codes. I tried to contact ford by chat support to make them aware but they were not interested in me reporting any potential safety problems.
