Mileage when the problem started
Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2006 Ford LCF 450 Series owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
My LCF dump truck began idling a bit irradically. Driving the truck at about 40 MPH it began to sputter and lose power, until the engine turned off completely leaving me stranded on the road. I opened up the primary fuel filter and found it to be caked with a silver metallic material. I put in a new filter and was able to get the truck home, but the engine was not running as it should. I researched the issue online and found a lot of diesel Ford truck owners were experiencing the same problem, and it was because the fuel tanks were delaminating and getting sucked through the fuel system.
Our company has a 2006 Ford LCF medium duty truck with 30,000 miles on it and the 4.6 l v-6 powerstroke diesel. At about 24,000 miles we began having power loss issues with it. We pulled the fuel filters and found them clogged with what appeared to be flakes of silver paint. Assuming we had gotten a bad tank of fuel, we replaced them and assumed the problem would go away. Since then we have had to replace the filters 3 more times ( at $85.00 each time ) in 6,000 miles. The truck will start to lose power quickly, with no warning and can even stall suddenly. After researching on line, I have found that the problem is extremely widespread with Ford diesel medium duty trucks and is caused by the fuel tanks delaminating. The repairs can be anywhere from $600 - $8,000 depending on how much damage is done. …
We purchase the Ford LCF in April of 2006 and had our first fuel pump replacement in feb. Of 2007 at just over 14,000 miles. Luckily the first replacement was under warranty, since the first repair/replacement we have had the truck down for similar related items to fuel pump 7 times. We stopped bringing it to rush truck center after warranty was expired because their rates are so high. This year it was down almost 45 days off the road dealing with Ford corporate office begging them to do a buy back, because this vehicle is costing us as an arm and a leg and negatively affects our business. The vehicle barely has 65,000 miles and has become so undependable that we don't know what to do. Our business is directly related to construction, we as many others are barely hanging on and cannot just replace this vehicle. It also has a defect related to the air-conditioner. …
Tl contact owns a 2006 Ford LCF. While driving approximately 55 MPH on normal road conditions, the engine stalled without warning. The contact made several attempts before the engine restarted. The warning indicators were not illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the failure was related to the fuel system. The technician replaced the fuel pump and fuel injectors under the warranty. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer on three separate occasions for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. There was a previous safety complaint filed for this vehicle over a year ago, which consisted of different safety issues. The failure mileage was 46,000 and current mileage was 47,000. Updated 02/24/08. Unknown 02/25/09.
Tl contact owns a 2006 Ford LCF l55. While driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle stalled and caused the contact to pull over. The vehicle would not restart and was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that the fuel pump, filter, and tank were defective. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was towed on three more occasions due to the same failure over the past year. After the most recent failure, the manufacturer and the dealer stated that they were no longer liable for the repairs because the vehicle was not under warranty. The vehicle has not been repaired again. The current mileage was 37,500 and failure mileage was 20,358.
Our 2006 Ford LCF runs very rough, and stalls while moving. Ford dealership said the fuel tank is delaminating inside, causing the fuel injectors to fail. Apparently this has been going on for the last couple of years. We've replaced several fuel injectors over that time. The cost to fix this (from Ford) is 5,000.00. New tank, fuel lines, all new injectors. In researching this issue, I found that this is becoming common for the Ford 2006 Ford LCF. I have very good maintanance records and only use fuel from one source. Since 2009 I have spent 14,000.00 on repairing this Ford LCF, mostly fuel issues.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 Ford LCF truck. The contact was driving approximately 65 MPH when the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was restarted after waiting twenty minutes and was taken to an authorized dealer ten times for the similar defect and repaired each time under the service warranty. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic where the fuel delivery rail was replaced. The failure persisted after the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 2,760.
The driver is onthe road, truck engine bogs, then dies.he managed to get it off the road, let sit for a few minutes, then the truck restarted and ra for a little while longer, then the same scenario, several more times before he managed to get it to the shop. I pulled both fuel filters and found the on-frame filter plugged with a scaly, whitish-silver crystalline film. I replaced both filters, now, a few thousand miles on the new filters, it is doing it again and I am replacing the filters again.
Ford LCF has had continual problems when driven at higher speeds. Vehicle stalls out and can only be restarted after cool down. We have had the vehicle in for repeated service but the problem continues. We have concluded that the only solution is not to drive this truck at higher speeds and keep it in town. The dealer has replaced injectors and other fuel delivery parts and on one service call stated that the truck needed an oil change. Previous oil change was at 3000 miles.
2006 Ford LCF fuel system failed while driving several times over 6 or 7 years, Ford repaired fuel system, over $5,000. Fuel tank delaminated, May 2014 same thing all over again. The truck has stalled on the road at 40 MPH several times this year. After the stall is will not restart, needs towed. I have over 18,000 in repairs over the past few years. It is at the Ford dealership and need injectors and oil pressure pump again. Ford will not warranty this constant problem.
