I have a 2000 Ford f250 super duty 4x4 7.3 diesel. While driving over a mountain pass on 11-4-06 the front end started shaking violently and I almost lost control of the vehicle. I managed to steer it to the side of the road where I discovered the left front hub assembly/ wheel bearing had failed and the tire and wheel were falling off the vehicle. The truck was towed to a large dealer where both front hub assemblies were replaced. These hub assembles are a sealed unit with no way of servicing them. This repair is very expensive( 450.00) per side for parts + labor. The dealer stated that this has been a problem with these trucks and couldn't understand why Ford hasn't recalled the problem,as they alone have replaced close to 65 units and this is just one dealer. Needless to say Ford wouldn't stand behind the repair and I had to pay it myself. …
Front hubs on 4wd Ford f-250 pickup were stuck in locked, even though set to automatic. Caused failure of cv joint on front drive shaft, which resulted in crack case and transmission exploding (literally, as in parts flying all over I-80). Transmission shop owner (action transmission, rock springs, wy) indicated he's seen same occur before. One part dented support on pontoon boat being towed -- if not there, could have gone through someone's windshield. A very dangerous failure, in my opinion. I have kept and photographed the parts replaced by shop (except what was left of the transmission, which was required to avoid core charge) as well as several pieces I picked up off hightway. The hubs had problems in the past and were replaced less than 11,000 miles before incident, yet were outside fords 12-month "warranty" period. …
Four wheel drive wont engage at times never know if its lock in even when indicator light says your in four wheel drive .dealer replaced hub but it still does it. Mechanic reported that his bay partners truck does the same thing.they now tell me they believe its a cold weather problem and that they cant diagnose it any futher as temps are to warm .its now been at the dealership (northhampton Ford in mass.) for atotal of 12 days for this problem. I have all contacted my district attornies office regarding this matter. Previous to this Ford did over $1000 in parts alone warrenty work . At times I have not been able to make it home in three inches snow.
Repeated manual transmission failure. Ford replaced my manual transmission on my 2000 f250 under warranty, with about 35,000 miles on it. The transmission again failed with about 84,000 miles on the truck, 49,000 on the transmission, and $4,000 out of my pocket. This truck is well maintained and rarely operated with a load. A second complaint is that I have now taken my truck in for the 100,000 tune up. The dealer informed me the spare tire fell off because the cable holding it broke. The spare tire has never been removed from the truck. This is a serious concern if spare tires are falling off of trucks.
Esof system for 4-wheel drive for 2000 Ford f250 with 77K miles: the esof on my truck failed to disengage the front hubs, leaving them permanently in the locked position. The dealer informed me that the hubs, motor, etc of the esof system had to be replaced due to corrosion and water in the system. I am not sure how this happened since the only water I encounter is what is on the highway when it rains. Evidently the hubs had been locked for a long period of time, as it LED to additional wear and tear on the upper and lower ball joints, which also had to be replaced.
The front "o" rings in the axle fail causing the grease to leak out and the "floating hubs" stop functioning and either lock in 4x4 mode or not. There is now way to see or check this failure and the repair is to replace the hub and bearing assembly. This repair is anywhere between 1200.00 to 1600.00 depending on the dealer doing the job. This is a very common problem for the f250 4x4 since there were three in the shop at the same time as mine. There is only 47000 miles on my truck and this was not covered by warranty since the factory ended at 36000 miles.
First, I love my truck, but if I didn't have an extended warranty, it be down the road. Items either repaired or replaced all before 47K miles (now has 49K miles as of 10/2005) with all work being done at my local Ford dealership: automatic transmission was replaced once, and again required repair for broken pump. Rear end completely replaced. Auto front locking hubs replaced twice. Rear driveline was replaced. Air box broken and replaced. "super duty diesel" implies a really tough truck, but I baby mine - is that what I'm done wrong?
While accelerating and stopping there is a clunk and you can feel it under the truck. The dealer suggested it was the brakes. I had the brakes changed and the rotors and drums checked but it is still having the problem. I recently visited the Ford -trucks. Com site to find several cases of this and it apparently is due to an improperly greased drive shaft at the rear bearing. This is a problem that Ford should correct due to their negligence in improperly greasing the joint.
I have replaced the transmission 3 times since I bought the vehicle in March of 2000. Now it is out of warranty and needs another transmission the last transmission was put in(October 2002)they said they would warranty the transmission for one year but now they don't want to do it because it has an after market suspension lift and bigger tires (it's been on there since they put the first transmission in and they performed warranty work on it then).
While driving to work on October 7, 2009 I had a spark plug blow out of cylinder #3 of my 2000 Ford super duty v-10. This cost me $125 dollars of towing, and $350.00 in repair. I pulled over immediately to reduce the chance of anymore damage to the vehicle. I don't know what happened to the spark plug after hearing it bouncing under the vehicle. Hopefully it didn't cause any damage to other vehicles on the freeway at the time.
