Tl contact owns a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact had the vehicle repaired according to recall NHTSA campaign id number 00V268000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system) in 2005. While driving approximately 35 MPH, he smelled a mild burning odor. Minutes later, he noticed smoke rising from the front end of the vehicle. Seconds later, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The majority of the vehicle was destroyed and it was towed to his residence. An investigator from the fire department concluded that the fire began near the fuel lines. The manufacturer has not been notified. The contact still has possession of the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 130,000.
On December 05/2002 my 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan caught on fire. The car was just warming up prior to being used to take my kids to school. The fire was extinguished by the dekalb county, georgia fire department. I learned after the fire that Chrysler had a recall related to a fuel rail/system defect. I have all major mechanic work done at the authorized Chrysler dealership and was never told of this recall.
Tl* - the contact's vehicle was taken to the dealer for recall 00V268000 repairs. The dealer told the contact that the recall repairs had already been made on the vehicle per recall requirements. This repair was done on December 11, 2006. On January 2, 2007 after driving approximate 6 miles the driver smelled gas fumes so he drove the vehicle back home. The contact stated that the gas fumes killed 14 of the birds that were housed in his garage. The contact opened the hood and gas was leaking. The contact stated that he had noticed the vehicle was using more gas than it had previously. The vehicle was still slowly leaking gas 24 hours after he originally noticed the leak. The contact stated that the vehicle was not drivable and he has not yet contacted the dealer. The contact stated the check engine light was on. Updated 2/6/2007 - updated 03/21/07
Occasional fuel smell from car for many months. After filling and parking car with rear end on up hill incline noticed gas pouring out from under car from top of gas tank. Took to dealer they said all recalls were performed. They dropped tank and informed me the plastic tank was splitting at the seam on top. Not a Dodge problem . My cost to replace $900.00. I think this is a manufacturer defect since I have been informed by several outside mechanics that they have replaced quite a few of these Chrysler fuel tanks. The potential for fire is great for some one passing by and flipping a cigarette.
The van had been driven 2-3 hours prior and parked. At 3:00 am while parked, the van caught fire in the front more so to the left side. The steering wheel was melted along with the front tires, dashboard, etc. Diamler Chrysler is sending a representative out to diagnose the van. This van has a 3.3 litre engine as stated in the recall for the fuel rail cross over tube -o- ring; NHTSA recall campaign 02V293000, which the owner has yet to find out if actual recall affects her van. Please describe details ts
The meter read less than half a tank of gas, the van ran out of gas, then the engine stalled. The consumer started the vehicle and began to drive when soon after the check engine light illuminated. The consumer was told the problem was a misfired cylinder, the fuel fuel pump was buried inside the gas tank, and when the fuel level dropped below the fuel pump, the pump heated up and sucked in air instead of the gasoline.
Consumer took children to school and could smell gas, consumer had received a recall regarding the fuel pump, however after speaking with the dealer he did not believe this problem had to do with the recall, after package, vehicle went into house, neighbor called her and stated her vehicle was on fire and was totaled, claim 20-5211-880.
After receiving the first recall notice (96v-002) the repairs were made at the dealer, approximately 5 months later the fuel tank caught fire while being driven, and the consumer believes that the initial repair was done incorrectly or was not done at all the consumer is requesting compensation for the losses sustained. Consumer was dropping off niece and noticed smoke coming from under the hood, consumer lifted up the hood and thought it was okay, after driving past 4-5 houses, consumer saw orange and stopped, vehicle was on fire, consumer had heard that there was a recall on the fuel line, claim 49-3238-941.

Fuel system, gasoline › Fuel injection system
Vehicle description: Mini vans built with 3.3l and 3.8l engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. Fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.
Remedy: Dealers will install a seal on the vehicle fuel rails to prevent external leakage of fuel from the fuel rail crossover tube, should the existing o-rings continue to degrade. Owner notification began on January 25, 2002.
Fuel system, gasoline › Delivery › Fuel pump
Vehicle description: minivans. Fuel can leak from the fuel tank at the interface of the fuel pump module attachment.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel pump module attaching nut with a nut that includes tighter design tolerances. The sealing o-ring will also be replaced.
Fuel system, gasoline › Storage › Tank assembly › Filler pipe and cap
A static electric charge can build up on the ungrounded metal section of the fuel filler tube.
Remedy: Dealers will install a ground strap for the fuel filler tube.
Fuel system, gasoline › Delivery › Hoses, lines/piping, and fittings
The fuel tank rollover valve can allow fuel to pass into the vapor canister resulting in the potential for fuel leakage.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel tank filler tube with a filler tube that has an additional rollover valve. The associated rollover valve vapor hoses will be rerouted.
