While driving with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle started steering itself. When the brakes were applied, the ABS locked up. The consumer lost control of the vehicle and impacted a guard rail. The vehicle spun around and backed into the guard rail. The vehicle then turned around and faced the other side of the road. The air bag(s) did not deploy and the seat belts did not restrain the consumer.
Tl* the contact owns a 1995 Buick Regal. The contact stated that as the engine was started, the driver side air bag exploded haphazardly. The air bag deployment burned the contact's face and hands as he was trying to stop the air bag with his hands. The vehicle was not involved in a crash or any type of slight impact. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 190,000.

We received a safety notice of the possibility of driver side air bag deployment due to defective inflator in July of 2000. I contacted Buick in December 2000 wondering why we had not heard anything about recall and was told 3 to 6 months more before repair would be available. They did replace the defective part with a new old part that had not suffered the degradation of time. This temporary replacement was/is to hold me over until the proper part becomes available. My complaint is the original letter stated the repair would be available in several months. I waited 6 months to be told 3 to 6 more months. What if I sell or trade this vehicle in does the manufacturer track this vehicle down through registration information or does the vehicle go unrepaired at a cost savings to the manufacturer? A response to my concerns would be appreciated. Thank you.

The part to complete recall 00v-171 (frontal air bag) was on back order and the consumer was instructed to obtain a rental car, the consumer was told that GM would only pay 30 dollars a day for a rental car and the vehicle was not comparable to the Buick Regal the consumer owned, the consumer paid the difference for a comparable rental car and is requesting reimbursement.
