Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1996 Toyota T100 owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The firewall on my 1996 Toyota T100 has cracked where the master clutch cylinder attaches. I am unable to get the truck into gear. Approximately 80,000 miles. Many other people have reported this problem as well yet Toyota refuses to accept responsibility.
First the clutch pedal bracket bolt fell out whle stopping at an intersection. After pushing the vehicle across three lanes of traffic I put the bolt back in and proceeded to my destination. The clutch did not seem to work correctly thereafter. I took it to an independent Toyota maintenance shop and had they adjusted the clutch pedal. Things appeared to work OK after that for about a month. Then the bolt started backing out again, so I observed the lock washer was no longer functioning as designed and replaced the lock washer. Things seemed OK for about another month, and then I heard popping and squeaking when I depressed the clutch pedal. On further inspection, I found the clutch pedal bracket to be cracked at the firewall. Toyota customer service refuses to admit they have a safety design problem and have no service bulletins on the issue.
While traveling, noticed gears were hard to shift. Consumer was unable to shift. Dealer has serviced vehicle at consumer's cost. Dealer replaced clutch pedal bracket. Two days after the clutch was fixed there was a loud snap when the pedal was depressed. It was found that the clutch pedal was defective. It was replaced at consumers expense and the squeak noise returned.
Bracket broke resulting in clutch being inoperable. The bracket was welded by the local Toyota dealer and replaced. It broke again on 5/10/2001 at 95364 miles with the same result. This time it was taken to a different Toyota dealer and they replaced the part. Contacted Toyota customer service and they said they are unaware of any recall for this part.
When placing the clutch in gear consumer noticed there is vibration in the front end. Also when the clutch is placed in gear and upon depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle is at a death stop RPM race. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer stated the clutch burned out and need replacement. Please provide any further details.
I read in the local paper that there had been 14 clutch bracket failures on Toyota T100 pickups. I had this occur on my pickup. The bracket failed gradually over time until I though the clutch had gone out. I took it to the dealer and they identified the failed bracket as the root cause. I had to pay for the repair.
Clutch pedal bracket assembly cracked and flexing which resulted in clutch not engaging and disengaging. Problem was not evident until it the clutch was disfunctional. Failed as I was making a left hand turn in an intersection and if not for the quick thinking of the other drivers May have cause an accident.
Transmission wore out at 28000 miles repair to firewall was made at 57000 miles when clutch failed to disengage bracket for pedal completely failed at 110000 seat belt was replaced once and it continues to get caught in door because of weak retractor
Defective clutch bracket broke, causing the occupant not being able to shift into different gears which May resultin vehicle stalling and a crash. Manufacturer came out with a new design clutch bracket. Please provide further information.
The mounting of the clutch master cylinder to the firewall shows signs of cracking at the mounting holes. The fire wall itself flexes when the clutch pedal is depressed. Possibly causing premature wearout of the clutch assembly
