The dashboard in my Solara started to melt under the sun. My vehicle is garage kept and is maintained properly. The dash shows nicks if you hit it with something like a fingernail. I contacted Toyota as I had the dash replaced and my dealer wrote the problem was material defect. I had to pay the labor of over $400 as my dealer absorbed the cost of the dash. Toyota brushed me off and refused to even pay half the cost. This is a serious problem and we the customer shouldn't have to pay for a mistake by Toyota. I know I am not the only person with this problem as my daughter's 2009 Camry has the same issue. A recall needs to be done so Toyota accepts responsibility for this problem.

December 21, 2013. I was pulling into a parking place from a large parking lot, foot on the brake almost stopped; engine roared and I catapulted over the parking curb into and through some bushes and out the other side of the bushes angling right and into the street. Over $5,000 damage to car exterior extensive scratches, back bumper came off; some undercarriage damage, details unknown to me. Still in body shop as of the afternoon of January 8, 2014.

Overnight my 2008 Camry Solara dashboard has multiple cracks and has become tacky and shiny. This manufacturer defect continues to progress to current date. It is a safety issue because it causes a glare when sun is in direction of travel or sun is below 70 degree plane to reflect off the dash surface. Polarized sunglasses defer some of the glare. There is a safety concerned with the cracks expanding and changing and the gummy surface blending around airbag location which will prevent passenger airbag to deploy. Toyota USA and dealer will repair at my cost with a very nominal cost adjustment about 20% for replacing the dash surface. The car is in excellent shape, always garage kept at work or residence. There are thousands of Toyota cars or perhaps tens of thousands with the same issue over multiple manufacturer years. …
This past year the dashboard began to get very sticky and started cracking in various areas. I took the car to earl stewart Toyota in lake park, fl. And they advised that the car was no longer under warranty and they could do nothing. I checked online and found numerous other Toyota owners with the same problem. I contacted Toyota corporate and they initially refused to repair it as it was no longer under warranty. When I told them I was going to the local media tv news to complain, they immediately agreed to pay for the part, but not the labor. I did agree and had the car repaired at earl stewart Toyota and paid the total of $1795.27. I submitted the bill to Toyota corporate and they refunded me $1268.65 for the part and I paid the $425 for the labor. I believe this is a safety issue because of the bright reflection of the sun onto the windshield from the sticky dash. Thank you.
