NHTSA defect investigations

Federal safety investigators have looked into a possible defect involving the 2015 Porsche Cayenne:

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

NHTSA investigation EA21002 · opened Sep 17, 2021 · open

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.

What 2015 Porsche Cayenne owners say

Engine & cooling

After the emissions recall was performed the vehicle has an issue that when turning a corner the engine will not produce any power and will not shift down in order to get the car to accelerate. You get no response from the throttle pedal unless you depress it fully to the floor and then the car will jerk and accelerate uncontrollably. This creates an unsafe condition when trying to pull out into traffic. I have almost been in an accident multiple times because of this with oncoming cars and with cars following me as they are trying to merge also and my vehicle will not accelerate. I have driven a vehicle identical to mine that has not had the emissions recall performed and it does not have this issue.

Porsche cars north America as part of the epa/carb settlement modified the 2015 Cayenne in a manner to comply with the original emissions requirements. The modification has significantly affected performance I such a way that the vehicle is now dangerous in certain situations. When merging onto highways or attempting to overtake there is a significant lack of response to throttle input leading to near misses by other vehicles. This has become more pronounced as the modifications have had time to adapt over time. Porsche has continued to deny an issue and states the vehicle is operating as designed after the modification. This sums up our experience with this vehicle, it is to the point that it is unsafe and dangerous to drive

Transmission & drivetrain

My Porsche Cayenne diesel has had the Porsche diesel emissions settlement program "fix" completed. Since the "fix" the vehicle has become dangerous to drive in certain situations. When merging, turning a slow speed corner or rolling through a yield sign there is a significant lag/delay from the time the throttle input happens and a response from the motor. This delay has been as long as 2 seconds leading to numerous near misses. Porsche has insisted the vehicle is fine and refuses to do anything about it. In accordance with the epa/carb approved emissions modification, the shifting behavior has been adjusted. Additionally, the enhanced automatic engine braking feature has been removed. …

Electrical system

Shortly after taking delivery of this Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle (purchased April 25, 2022, from Porsche Nashua, Nashua, NH), the backup/parking sensors failed to sound. While reversing at home, I waited for the audible warning beep that never came and slowly backed into my own parked 2017 Porsche 911. The Cayenne's door was dented; the 911 was undamaged. A functioning parking sensor system would have warned me and prevented this collision. The vehicle had passed the Porsche Approved CPO multi-point inspection, which is supposed to cover these safety systems. I consider this a safety-related defect in a certified vehicle.

May 2021 · crash

On August 21 2021, I was out shopping. When I went out to return home, the car would not start. I could not jump start it or anything. I had it towed to the dealer. I found out from Porsche and dealership that my car was disabled by Porsche Connect. I do not have this service or pay for it. On Friday Sept 3, I was informed by Porsche customer service that it disabled my car because the original owner (in 2015) changed their phone number. So Porsche assumed stolen and shut down. I did not authorize this, I did not sign up for this service. They will not fix the car because they say it is out of warranty. Because I do not know the code to turn the car back on, they want to replace parts and say I have to get the Porsche Connect App. This is a known issue at Porsche because the dealer found a TSB on it. They are not taking responsibility for shutting down the car with out my permission. …
