What owners report
Tl* Takata air bag recall. The contact's husband owned a 2001 Infiniti I30. The contact stated that while her daughter was in line at a drive thru, a smell emitted throughout the vehicle without warning. As the burning smell progressed, she also saw white smoke coming from the rear end of the vehicle. The driver got out of the line and checked the hood of the vehicle where she saw flames coming the engine. Authorities were called to the scene of the fire; however, before they arrived, the vehicle had exploded. The air bags deployed upon explosion. No injuries were reported at the scene and a police report and fire report were filed. The vehicle was destroyed due to the explosion and was towed to an unknown location. …
"Takata recall".... I received an airbag safety recall back in oct 2013. I took the car to kuni westside inifiniti, lynnwood, wa.... They completed the recall with inflator -air bag, as-k8e61-7994d. I am unaware as to which air bag was replaced. Recently the air bag indicator light on the dashboard started flashing. I called the dealership and was informed that there was no recent recall, just the one back in 2013. They informed me to make an appointment and they would check it out... The dealership is approx 80 miles away from my home. I am 88 yrs old and I have yet to take it in.... What is the "flashing light" telling me???
The passenger front tire blew, the car then locked up, the steering wheel locked up, the car sped out of control (police estimated up to 70 miles per hour), the car ran into a brick building. The air bags did not deploy! I woke up surrounded by a crowd of people. Although, I pressed the brakes to the floor, and there were black marks on the parking lot leading up to the car inside the brick building, the car continued to accelerate, out of control.
After backing out of a parking space, the vehicle auto-accelerated when the transmission selector was placed into the 'drive' position. To avoid a head on collision (the vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed) the steering wheel was turned toward the left. The result was the striking of the bumper area of three parked vehicles, one of which suffered some rear fender damage. Damage to my vehicle was severe; however, the air bag failed to activate. This was not the first incident of 'auto-acceleration'. It occured when the vehicle was new. The vehicle was taken to and remained at the dealership for approximately one-week, but no fault was found. *akmore recently, the vehicle continued to increse in speed although no force was applied to the accelerator. In these cases, there was sufficient time so no damage was done.
The 'Air Bag' light stays on at all times. Its been like this for over 10 years. I've called my local Infiniti dealer, they said they cannot replace the Takata airbag until NHTSA identifies this model in a national recall. I'm afraid the airbag may not properly deploy or deploy inadvertently, and cause serious injury or death of driver or occupants. Please do the right thing and add the 1999 Infiniti I-30 to recall list. Thanks
Takata recall I have a Infiniti i30t it has the air bag light just flashing I have brought it in and they suggested I should contact you I don't have a error code for you but if you would want more info feel free to contact me at [redacted].
Air bag light flashing, dealership indicated "a very common problem" for this year and make infiniiti . Well a common problem to me seems like it should be a recall. I was told by dealership that it would over $1000 does this have anything to do with Takata inflators that have been recalls on millions of cars but just skipped this year and make? I was told airbag will still deploy, well I was involved in a front end accident, air bag did not deploy! This is a real concern, this needs to be investigated, and recall implemented before someone dies as a result!
I purchased this car, as the second owner, in 2001, and everything appeared fine. Within 6 months, my air bag light had come on. There was no accident/incident involved - I turned the ignition key and the light came on. I have asked a few mechanics about it, but they all said the only way to know if it is truly defective is to have it deploy, and there is no way of knowing unless I actually hit something. It had 81K miles when I purchased it in 2001, and now has about 153K. I am afraid to drive it if I don't know whether it is safe. We did have one very minor collision about 5 years ago, (another driver hit us driving very slowly) and the driver's side rear quarter panel was dented, but it did not deploy the airbag. With so much press about the airbags, I thought I should check to see if my model has been recalled yet. …

NHTSA investigations
Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.
