Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2008 Dodge Avenger owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

Breaking system failed, it is available for inspection, I told the state trooper what happened along with several police officers, they agreed that the breaking system was not supposed to lock up which caused the car to skid several feet and the end results are that a very bad wreck happened which left my car undrivable and locked up, the car front disk breaks , front wheel drive, there not suppose to lock up. The air bag did go off, there was no warning sign to let you know you were going to crash, the car picked up speed even while the breaks were fully pushed to the floor when the car did not slow down this caused a wreck and totaled the front of my car resulting in the frame being severely damaged , hood push in, windshield busted, driver hit with air bag, car had to be pulled whiteout being able to be put in neutral which caused more damage to car. …

Today is July 17, 2018. I discovered there were 6 recalls on the 2008 Dodge Avenger I purchased a month and a half ago, but the dealer never bothered to disclose any of this information to me. When I asked why the sensor light was on I was told it was nothing important, just the air pressure on the tires due to leakage, and all it needed was a cap on the valve stem. The caps on the valve stems of two wheels were replaced but the light stayed on. A few days after the purchase, I was driving about 66 MPH when the car started jerking as if the fuel was gasping; it scared me to death! Two weeks after the purchase, the engine light came on while I was driving on the freeway, and wouldn't go off; the car must be taken in for diagnostic which I'm told will cost almost $100 to find out why the engine light was on. …

My son purchased his 2008 Avenger used in 2014 from oklahoma. He is in the military and while deployed I am maintaining his vehicle at the local dealership in michigan with oil changes and service. While driving at 55mph on the freeway the TPMS light came on then the cruise control turned off. Then the engine light as I was exiting the freeway the engine stopped. I started the vehicle which stalled at every. Intersection and on turns would stall putting me in the opposite lane. When looking up recalls it showed the exact problem. I took the vehicle to the dealership. They stated no recall on this VIN# and the problem is his timing chain and of course the fee is 1500.00 dollars. It seems Fiat Chrysler is trying to do everything not to fix these older models.

Tire pressure monitoring system short circuits leading to faulty readings on gauge, cruise control won't operate at speeds over 40 MPH, radio constantly skips from one station to another, etc. Contacted Chrysler about the recall on this (recall #: 08V152000) asking to have it repaired free of charge, but they refused. These issues occur when the vehicle is both stationary and mobile.

I have been very very disappointed with my 2008 Avenger.. Seems like I've experienced one problem after the other.. The first was the TPMS, which a recall was made and that was fixed. 2nd I had to replace the whole gear shift because it wouldn't come out of park... I called the dealership and they advised me that they saw a significant increase on those parts and alot of the avengers were experiencing the same thing. 3rd, now the bearings inside the alternator have broke.. And I have to replace the whole alternator itself. We again called the Dodge house and they also explained how many request they are getting ref this part and having to keep them in stock continuously. Everyone I know that has an Avenger have all experienced all of these same problems.. And my question is at what point does Dodge start issuing a recall?? …

I purchased a 2008 Dodge Avenger last April, brand new. I have taken care of the vehicle, the lighting on the dash is always coming on, so I am constantly taking it to the shop and they run the diagnostics and they tell me nothing is ever wrong. I had to take the it in for a warranty problem on top of all of that. Then this last time I thought it was making a funny noise with the brakes. I took it in and they said I have a leak in my transmission and oil tank, of course the only thing on the dash lighting this time says "tire problem". It is such an unsafe vehicle, I ran out of gas in the middle of making a turn in an intersection and my gas light wasn't on and the gage showed I had quarter of a tank. The car has caused me nothing but problems. Then to top it off, I got in my car to go home from work and it wouldn't move out of gear and I had to call a tow truck. …

2008 Dodge Avenger all four valves on the vehicle are corroded and have broken off. One tire is unable to even receive any air into the tire. This is a safety issue!!!! I am very afraid that this will cause harm to me and my family. I went to a mechanic who told me that he has seen this happen on many Chrysler/Dodge vehicles and that it is a manufacturer defect. I was told to go to the dealer ship and that they May replace this for me but was just handed to the side with a phone number. When calling this "safety" number I was once told again that they could and would not do anything for me. I have read and heard that this is a huge issue on the make of this vehicle so why is Chrysler not doing anything to fix the problem? What will this take? I cannot afford over 500 dollars to fix a valve issue that Chrysler is reliable for.

One days after driving from salt lake city airport to park city, utah, the Dodge Avenger's tire pressure warning light came on. Fearing that the tire(s) were low, I stopped at a gas station and filled two tires. As soon as I put the pump on the third tire, the valve cracked off and all the air came out of the tire. I replaced the tire with the utility spare. I took the car to a tire shop, and the gentleman at the tire shop told me the valves on these cars break easily. The tire shop had to replace the valve by ordering one from the Dodge dealer, and the part did not arrive for two days. The approximate cost for replacing the valve was $90. For the two days during the repair, the car could not be taken on the expressway. I kept the broken part of the valve.
