Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

NHTSA investigation EA21002 · opened Sep 17, 2021 · open

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited.

On thanksgiving 2012 , I was coming back from out of town and driving on a highway when I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed a bit of smoke. I thought it was because the night was cold it appeared as if smoke was coming from the back of the car. However, after noticing that the smoke got a big bigger, I pulled off the side of the road. I opened the hood and there was fire coming from inside the hood where the engine was. I ordered my family including my 2 year old back out of the car as I thought it would explode. We waited until the fire department arrived but by then the flames subsided. I waited about an hour and half in the cold for aaa to tow my car 154 miles. I still have the receipt for the tow up to this day. Took it to Chrysler dealership and was told that they had no idea what caused the problem. …
