Windshield wipers fail intermittently. Problem was first noticed over a year ago while on a cross country vacation in light rain. A year later the wipers have degraded to almost a complete component failure. Even though my truck is a 98', I was wondering if this is a continuation of recall #98043.
The windshield wiper motor relay malfunctioned, causing the windshield wipers to stop functioning. Also, manifold intake gasket leaked antifreeze, and had to be replaced. The previous year make/model with the same problem have been recalled.
Windshield wipers will quit operating unexpectedly during there operation, during extremely heavy rain, loss of driver visibility greatly increases the risk of a vehicle crash. This has ocurred to me on numerous occassions. A recall was initiated by the Chevrolet motor division on all light duty Pickup trucks & sport utility vehicles, 2 & 4 wheel drive. A solder joint near the wiring harness connector can crack causing the problem. Owner notification began on December 15, 1998. I have notified the Chevrolet motor division of the problem & have ben informed by there customer relationship manager larry larson that my vehicle was not subject to the recall & not involved in any special policy for the windshield wiper motors. He stated that this problem could be related to owner maintenance, age or wear. …
The vehicle was just recently transfered to my name though I have been the primary driver since the vehicle was purchased in December of 1995. The windshield wipers have failed on numerous occassions. I have had the service station where I trade look at it and unless I want to cover the expense of having the motor replaced they recommended that I "jiggle" the wire to the wiper box. After seeing a newspaper article on this specific problem in this model vehicle I took the article to the dealer and his suggestion was to replace the motor at my expense and hope an official recall is eventually issued at which time I would be reimbursed. This is a danger and it is a persistant and ongoing problem. I fail to see why the responsibility and expense should be mine. I am asking that NHTSA further investigate this problem before someone is seriously hurt due to the failure of the wiper system.
There is a recall on the wiper motor electronic board for some Chevrolet wiper motors. I have contacted several dealers and parts distributors to find that the part number of the recall is the same as the number that my vehicle has, yet my vehicle is not covered. I have found many reports from owners with the same vehicle having the same problem. I'm sure that my incident where the wipers quit in the middle of a rain storm while traveling 55 MPH was just as hair-raising as the rest. Yet it would seem that no one would take care of this issue. This problem has been known for more that 4 years. This is an extremely dangerous situation and I would like to know why nothing has been done. With the number of incidents reported, the same part numbers involved, and the same intermittent failure descriptions, I am tired of hearing the same answer - "there is nothing we can do".
Discovered a NHTSA on 1995 Chevrolet Pickup trucks relative to windshield wiper failures. Mine has been doing the same thing as described in NHTSA 98V150 for past 2 + years. When they stop working I have to stop the vehicle, raise the hood and reach the circut board box on the firewall. I shake/rap it slightly and the wipers start working again. Also moving the wires going into the unit can cause the wipers to stop or run. I have contacted Chevrolet and they claim my truck is not included in the recall even though it is the same problem described in NHTSA 98/150. This is a high risk safety problem as the wipers can fail at any time or intermittingly. I don't understand why my 1995 truck is excluded to repair this safety defect and problem that's just like other Chevrolet 1995 trucks.
