Car caught fire in my driveway 10 minutes after I returned home. Luckily no one was injured and fire dept. Was able to put out fire before it spread to my home. Fire inspector said it looked like it was caused by the fuel injectors.
Vehicle is experiencing a problem with the gas tank. The seam where the top of the tank and the bottom come together are rusted, causing the vehicle to lose a lot of gasoline. Consumer had to have the fuel tank replaced by an independent repair shop.
I purchased my vehicle used and it still had 1000 mile warranty from the dealer. When I got the car there was a problem with the fuel pump so they replaced it. Before I even got out of the parking lot the (vibration shudder hose) went bad. Or at least that is what the guy at the service area told me the name was. They have replaced that. And for almost two years now I have been fighting with them that the power steering has been whining. Also the brakes do not stop to well in the rain. I travel a lot and we go through brakes like water. We also had the ac compressor go out last year during the summer. The car was only 4 years old. We keep our car up very well. I do not understand all these problems. I know this May not seem like big problems but when I keep my car up and have been fighting with the dealer due to whining this is frustrating.
Tl contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina. While driving between 30-35 MPH, the vehicle stalls and the speedometer displays inaccurate readings. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, the vehicle kicks and begins losing speed. The vehicle is either losing or not getting enough fuel. The vehicle had to be towed on more than one occasion. The dealer could not duplicate the failure. The contact believes that the cause of the failure was the catalytic converter. NHTSA campaign id number 073021000 (fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:pressure relief devices). The failure mileage was 114,000.
I noticed the smell of gasoline. Initial searches for the source of the leak were unsuccessful, but after1 - 2 weeks it got worse and I was able to find it easily. The pressure regulator was leaking. I checked for a related recall and found that universal pressure regulators (upr's) produced after 1/9/07 had been recalled, but mine, I believe, is the original equipment pressure regulator. Nevertheless, it May have a design defect. The car has about 161,000 miles on it. The dealer indicated that failure of a part with that many miles on it would not be subject to a recall, even though it is a safety-related failure. I sought out the NHTSA site to try to find out if that is the case, or not. The "incident date" noted below is the date I found the leak. No damage was done, and there were no injuries.
We need assistants - my '97 Lumina caught on fire and burned down our house on 10/29/00. We lost the car, which melted down to the frame, the house and contents. We would have lost our lives if this had occurred two hours later. It has been determined by the athens clarke county fire investigator and the cotton states investigator that the fuel pump and daylight runners caused this fire. This defect in my vehcile is a life saftey issue - who will be the next victms? Please contact me asap.
Fuel filter burned up inside gas tank. The wires were burned and the plastic body was burned and charred. Mechanic was surprised that there was no fire or explosion. He said it was probaly a manufacturer defect and being that I had a full tank of gas saved the car from going on fire.
Vehicle was serviced about 2 yrs ago because it started losing power and was running rough. The power window on driver side stopped functioning. Brakes grind when wet even though they have been replaced. Noticed around this time that the car temperature gauge sometimes creeped up above normal. It seemed to be losing anti-freeze. The heater stopped working. I refilled the anti-freeze. It seemed to take care of the problem but it slowly returned. Vehicle was also very slowly losing oil. Last month (10/02) I started home from work. The car suddenly overheated. Strong fumes came into through the vents, burning my eyes. I had to stop repeatedly to let the car cool so that I could get home. I work only 3 miles from home. When I got home, the oil stick contained oil halfway up the stick. Started over flowing from the oil cap when I restarted. Smoke was heavy from the back. …
