Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

While driving home from work, my 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier suddenly stalled in traffic. In order to prevent a serious accident, I attempted to pull the vehicle to the side of the road. Without power steering (due to the vehicle stalling), control was limited and I ultimately ran into a snow bank. Luckily, I was able to get the vehicle off the road far enough to prevent a more serious accident involving other vehicles. The car would not restart, and I was forced to leave the vehicle on the roadside and get a ride home. At home, I performed an internet search and found that many other drivers had similar problems with the same vehicle, most of which are the result of premature failure of the fuel pump. Using information obtained from other owners with similar problems, I was able to get the vehicle started and running intermittently in order to get it home. …

2003 Chevrolet Cavalier- at 64,000 miles fuel pump died while parked at a store upon restart $700.00 replacement. At approximately 60,000 miles front clunking noise started, dealer could never find a problem, now at 76,000 miles, having front upper strut mounts replaced. Found alot of complaints online about same issues. I determined cause of front clunk on my own. Also, was in collision that involved front driver side, down driver side front fender, airbags did not deploy, don't know if they should have. Noone was hurt, was slow speed crash. Still cannot believe no recall on fuel pump or front suspension. Apparently GM doesn't want to foot the 700.00 bill for the fuel pump defect.

I was one block from home and my car stalled it wouldn't start back up. I found my self at the intersection. The mechanic said it is a bad fuel pump. The car only has 60,000 miles. This happened about this time last year . Also last year my gauge to my engine temperature went out of control. I can't tell the engine temp. Anymore.

There are numerous things, and the delaership has convinced GM, because I wrote GM about the problems with this, that I am making this stuff up to get an SUV. First the radio wasn't working, they put the cable back on said it was loose, its still not sounding like a radio should. Next was the popping in the front end, dealership turned rotors, under warranty back brakes squealed real loud they said it was dust I had to pay for that. Back brakes still squeal, front end still pops like a bad cv joint. Trunk wouldn't shut had to keep slamming it. Took it back they greased it worked for awhile starting to get hard to shut sometimes. Brake lights and back lights and cruise control quit working . Took it to dealership at least 5 or 6 times till they finally replaced it how long it will last I don't know. …

I was driving my car to go get groceries with my 2 yr old son. The car has no problems and drove fine there. I attempted to pull out of the parking lot and my car stalled. I tried again and it stalled once more. I managed to turn the engine over enough times to get it out of the middle of the parking lot. It was around 8 pm and getting cold and I had not only to deal with this, but have a young child out in the cold whether when he should be going to bed. I called my boyfriend and he picked us up and he looked at the car a bit since he knows quite a bit about cars. He could not find anything obvious so we had it towed for testing to mechanic he knows. The mechanic was generous enough to give us a bit of a discount on the tow and fuel pump, but getting this repaired was still costly. I ended up paying half and my boyfriend was generous enough to help me pay for the other half. …

While driving home from work, my car was running fine and then just died without any type of warning. I had the car towed for $100 and was told that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. I replaced the fuel pump on May 21st and now less then 6 months later, the exact same thing happens again! I have the car looked at and once again, the fuel pump needs to be replaced. I have found that this is an extremely common problem. When I got on your website and found that the possible recall had been closed, I wanted to scream! How many times am I going to have to replace the fuel pump before Chevy decides to do something about it? I'm a single mom and can't afford to due this every 6 months! After my experience with my Chevy Cavalier, I will never buy Chevy again! I do not understand how this issue can just be closed when there are so many people with the same problem. Search the internet! …

Bought 2003 Cavalier 7-26-2003, brand new. Stalled while driving 3-31-04 - smelled burning/chemical smell- car restarted - took to dealer - dealer found no problem. To dealer 3 times to fix detective exterior lighting 2004/2005. Several additional engine stalls 2004-2009 - car restarted. On 3-6-09 stalled while driving - wouldn't start - towed to dealer- dealer said fuel pump went bad - will repair at my expense - over $1,000. Dealer asked if I have extended warranty - I don't. When the car stalls out I have no brakes, no power steering - it is terrifying and very unsafe. And if the car is repaired is it going to be any safer? Will the same problem keep recurring as it did with the lighting signals? I am a safe driver, I am the only driver of this car, the car has only 51,000 miles on it, I only drive 10 miles to and from work, it is garage kept. …

I'd purchased my 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier in like-new condition with ~20K miles. Months after I'd started driving the vehicle, I noticed that when I would put the transmission into neutral(manual transmission), the RPM would drop well below 1000 and sometimes it would stall. When it would stall, it wouldn't start again for a few minutes of sitting. I had the vehicle looked at and no one could find a problem. This problem didn't occur at a regular interval, but instead happened randomly at least once within 2 or 3 months time. I have had the car for 4.5 years and the fuel pump has stopped operating completely. The problem wasn't apparent until I tried starting my vehicle on the morning of November 8th 2009 and the vehicle would not start. The starter was functioning properly, but the electronic fuel injection unit was making a different noise. …

I was heading out of my house in the evening and got about 2 or 3 miles from my home when I went to make a left turn through an intersection. Middle of the intersection my vehicle started to sputter and would not accelerate when I applied pressure to gas pedal. I was only able to coast just enough to clear the intersection and my vehicle ended up shutting down in the middle of the road. This problem occurred with out warning, no signs, no lights my vehicle just gave out on me in the middle of an intersection had it occurred just 5 seconds before I cleared the intersection I May have been seriously injured or worst it could have been a fatal accident. I do know that there are plenty of 2003 Chevy Cavalier owners who have experienced this same problem and it needs to be addressed. …

On May 31, my 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier ls sport stalled on a highway. I was in heavy traffic and my power steering went out, but I was luckily able to make it to the side of the road. I immediately exited my vehicle and called roadside assistance for a tow. After receiving diagnostics at a Chevy dealership, it was determined that my fuel pump had gone out and had to be replaced. The cost of this and replacing a fuel filter was close to $1,000. My car only has 60,000 miles on it, I had previously replaced the fuel filter 1 year before at another GM dealership, and I performed regular maintenance on the vehicle in accordance with the user manual. When I went home I researched the issue with the car, and lo and behold I came across hundreds of pages which described the exact same problem I had. …
