Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the automatic emergency braking system engaged while there were no vehicles or objects nearby. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the Super Cruise driver assistance feature disengaged unintendedly. The contact stated that upon attempting to reengage the feature, a message advising that the road lane could not be found or that the contact's face could not be read was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. Additionally, the contact stated while driving 50-60 MPH on the left lane, the Super Cruise driver assistance feature disengaged unintendedly, causing the vehicle front bumper corner to hit the wall on the driver's side. …
I was taking a left turn from [redacted] onto [redacted] in the outer (right) lane. As I was exiting the turn, the AEB went off suddenly without warning -- the car came to a sudden and complete stop. There were no cars or obstacles in the road ahead of us in either lane and so it is unclear what would cause the braking event. Due to the sudden stop, a man driving a moped was not able to stop in time--he was able to swerve to avoid a head on collision, but he collided with our rear passenger bumper. While, fortunately, there were no injuries, both vehicles sustained minor damage. This is the second incident of "phantom braking" I have experienced with this car. …
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The contact stated that while in reverse(R), the infotainment screen displayed a red, triangular warning symbol, rendering the back-up camera inoperable. The contact also stated that an alert feature warning the driver of incoming objects also failed to operate as needed. In addition, the contact stated that the infotainment system intermittently failed to return to normal operation while shifted out of reverse(R). The vehicle had been taken to the dealer on numerous occasions where the wiring harness, back-up camera, head unit, infotainment screen, and other parts related to the defect had been replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer had been notified on numerous occasions about the failure but offered no solutions. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 1,506.
I was driving on the highway with GM Super Cruise engaged. I was within the speed limit on a straight road with my hands near the wheel. Without warning, the steering turned sharply to the left on its own and locked - I was unable to correct it or override the system. The vehicle left the road, spun, and was totaled. I walked away with minor injuries. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. The vehicle has been inspected by police (report exists) and insurance representatives. The vehicle is currently at a dealership and is available for inspection. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer. I believe the Super Cruise system malfunctioned and caused the steering to lock in a direction I could not override.
The Telematics Module failed at 43,000 miles, 2 years. This shut down everything having to do with GPS, Communications, Super Cruise. I got into an accident, which I feel the car would have responded to, before the accident, if this system was working. The warning was the on star, super cruise, communications, warnings didn't work. On the dash a symbol GPS with red circle and line through it was visible. The Chevrolet Dealership diagnosed the problem and is replacing the module, at my expense. If you do a google search on Telematics Module you will find that this issue applies to all GM vehicles and failure rate is right when the manufacturers warranty runs out, 36,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The contact stated while the vehicle was in reverse(R), the cross-traffic alert system failed to alert of passing vehicles within 60-ft of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100.
First off the Forward Collision Alert doesn't work until your about 1 to 2 feet from impact, no matter which of the 3 settings it's put on. We were so close to impact to the rear of a semi when the service tech was testing it that I was very uncomfortable. The lane assist doesn't work until you're left of center or it bounces you back and forth like a drunk drive, plus it doesn't always reconize the yellow or white dotted line. On occasion it will completely go over left of center and put you in the left lane. (It will not maintain the car in the center of the lane.) Today after service the appointment on the these problems, 7 March 2023 both the service Tech and Service manger told me they're just warnings nothing they can do about it. The manufacture sells sheet clearly states Foward Crash Alert. What good is it if your crashing when the alert goes off. …
The car has now had five instances of phantom braking. The first time, I was in the left turning lane. A light rail type train was to the left. I was stopped waiting for the light to turn green. When the light turned green and the car in front of me started moving, I removed my foot from the brake and began to accelerate. I moved forward about 10 feet and the automatic braking system engaged at the car was stopped. There was no object or person in the path of the car. I went to accelerate again and the same thing happened. Both the passenger in the car and I were stumped. We'd never seen this happen before. The third time this happened, I was pulling into a driveway with a slight slope. There was a fence to the left and it was raining. When I was 1/2 way into the driveway, the car screeched to a stop. I've pulled into this driveway numerous times and this was the first phantom stop. …
This car is equipped with Super Cruise an automated driving feature that I believe had a huge part in my inability to avoid hitting a deer. There should be many more considerations and warnings to consumers to protect them. In my situation I kept driving for much longer than I should have because the strain was not so bad. But the feature does not have a feature to pull over. I had to manually pull over and it was in this short period of time where I was clearly too impaired to drive without super cruise but with it I was still fine I could keep my eyes open and on the road which was the only requirement. I was really not prepared and should have been told to make sure you get off the road sooner than you think because once you're off the highway if you don't have enough alertness to even pull over or in my case avoid a deer running straight toward my car. …
The situation occurs when using supercruise (GM's lane centering and adaptive cruise control system). Under certain conditions with super cruise engaged and one pedal drive mode active, pressing the cancel cruise button (example: taking manual control briefly in order to allow a merging car into your lane) causes the vehicle to abruptly decelerate without the ability to override with the pedal. This uncontrollable abrupt deceleration poses a hazard to vehicles behind me. This deceleration can only really be overridden by proactively pressing on the accelerator prior to disengaging the super cruise system. I suspect this problem is caused by logic in the super cruise system which does not allow the vehicle to accelerate while the steering wheel is flashing red (such as during disengagement). …
