While driving at night, the headlights go out. Leaving only the brights or fog lights operatable. They some times will come back on, but other times not at all. This is sporatic, with no rythme or reason. Driving at night for over a half hour with only your brights is extremely dangerous. Other motorists flash their lights at you if you have your brights on, or if only the fog lights are on, other motorists will flash their lights also. Driving with only the fog lights in rural areas, then being blinded by on coming vehicles is a nightmare. I drive to work at 5:30 am, always in the dark, on rural roads with no streetlights. When the head lights go out, while I am on a curve, and I have a semi barreling at me at 60mph, all I can say, is I'm thankful I can tell the story. …

The contact referenced the headlight failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V519000 (Exterior Lighting) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

While driving down the interstate last night at about 70 MPH my low-beam headlights suddenly went off plunging the road ahead of me into pitch black darkness. Full beam and directional lights were still functioning, managed to safely pull of to the side of the interstate, and luckily was able to use my cell phone to determine that the solid state headlight relay had failed. Luckily there is a similar relay located in the fuse box that controls the engine fan that I was able to utilize and continue on my journey. Needless to say this was a very unnerving/scary experience and can't imagine what it would be like for a less experienced driver. I find it hard to believe that GM thought that a system that could affect both headlight simultaneously in this way was remotely even a good idea?!

2005 Rainier · 168,000 miles · Oct 2017

Have noticed after a heavy and driving rain that the electrical systems acts up. We call it crazy car! All the dash lights blink & flash, bells ding and gauges fluctuate while the vehicle is at rest and on the move. We shut the engine off, sit for a minute and restart only to get the same thing. That May happen for the entire ride duration or we May get no dash lights at all. It appears to me that there is a short or a moisture that creates this happening because after a few days of good sunny weather where the water has evaporated from the roadways, our beloved rainer comes back to normal. We still experience the dimming of the headlights as we are driving at night when we are cruising with no gas pedal application at around the 32 MPH marking which is rather annoying as other drivers feel as if we are flashing them. …

2004 Rainier · 95,000 miles · Jun 2015

Headlights fail intermittently while driving. While driving last night the low beam headlights went out. The high beams still worked. This is about the sixth time this has happened. I changed out the headlight relay just before this occurred as I had seen a recall on 2006 and 2007 rainiers showing this as the problem. After a short time the high beams also went out. I parked and turned the engine off for a while and when I restarted the high beams were working again but not the low beams. I was doing a combination of street and highway driving and it appears to be unrelated to any road conditions as this has happened on both highways and city streets.
