While operating the x7, liquid from a loose lid of a cup was spilled (not in excess of 2oz) onto the console area as it was being placed into temperature controlled cupholders just forward of the gear shifter. This minimal amount of liquid caused the parking mechanism- GWS SHIFTER to short/fry rendering the car unable to shift gears. A message that the "P Button Not Working" and instruction to "hold the start/stop button down for 3 seconds" to make the car go into park was given. The Park button, shifter and start/stop buttons are located in the console behind the cup holders. This is a GREAT danger because this complete system failure can happen with MINIMAL liquid contact from incidental spills and the car becomes immovable. My car had to be towed to the dealer to have the GWS Shifter REPLACED and reprogramed and was VERY costly, and NOT covered by BMW warranty. …

BMW USA has issued 2 separate Recalls for the same issue involving component Electrical System Starter Assembly. Recall Notice 24V576 was issued in September 2024 and Recall Notice 25V644 was issued in September 2025. I purchased the vehicle from BMW of Carlsbad in September 2024 as a pre-owned thus did not receive any Recall Notice in 2024. However, as of October 2nd, 2026 my vehicle has failed to start completely possibly due to the starter since the battery and all other electronics and infotainment are working. Vehicle was towed to the authorized BMW of Carlsbad and upon completion of diagnostic confirmed the issue with the starter. However, the dealership refused to provide the fix for free as instructed in the Recall Notice 25V644 due to the VIN is not listed on query database which does not make sense as the vehicle BMW X7 was manufactured in May of 2019. …
