On February 5, 2022 while driving on 70 mph on I64 my vehicle shut down due to the recall causing the the high-pressure fuel pump to shut down causing the engine to stall and a message that there was a powertrain malfunction and the vehicle would not start back or go into gear. The interstate was very busy and I could have been hit by a tractor trailer or another vehicle at high speed. I received a recall notice that stated there was a remedy available November 2021, but when I called the dealership I was told there were no parts available and they would call me when parts became available. A month went by and the issue with the recall happened leaving me in a very dangerous situation. The car was towed to Moses BMW on 2/6/22 and over 30 parts have been ordered. I have been told that there is no estimate on when the parts would arrive. …
Hi, my vehicle has a recall, 21v586, for high pressure fuel pump. I suggest this recall should be elevated to a mandatory recall. When my fuel pump failed it immediately lost power while driving. I was fortunate to maneuver the car across traffic to a safe location. I consider myself a defensive and conscious driver. Had this been my wife or someone else I'm not real confident that they would be able to safely maneuver the vehicle as there was no warning. Moreover, my car has been unavailable since 5/19 when this occurred. This pump had a such a catastrophic failure that it sheared a mounting bolt holding it to engine. Metal fragments were displaced throughout the fuel system. Most recent estimate to replace fuel tank, fuel lines, low pressure pump and high pressure pump stands at $14,000+. …
The high-pressure fuel pump failed causing the engine to stop completely without any prior warning and the car put itself in park on the highway and would not get out of park to go into neutral or any other gear. This could have caused a very serious crash and highly increased my risk of injury or death. You are more than welcome to inspect it. It is currently sitting at the dealership waiting for a resolution. My safety and the safety of many others on the 65mph highway were put at risk when the car completely stopped in the middle of the road and would not move until the tow truck arrived to drag it on their truck (would not even go into neutral). The problem was confirmed by the BMW dealership of Cincinnati and inspected by them as well. There were absolutely no warning messages, signs, or anything informing me of an issue before this occurred. …
(1) Failed component: High Pressure Fuel Pump (2) The vehicle complete shut down without warning leaving the driver stranded on the road. (3) The problem has been assessed and confirmed. (4) The vehicle has been inspected by a certified BMW mechanic. (5) There was no warning prior to failure. Description: While driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle shut down. I was told by a certified BMW mechanic that the high pressure fuel pump imploded, sending metal chards through the fuel injection line thereby disabling the vehicle entirely. I inquired as to whether or not a recall had been issued and BMW told me it had not been issued for my vehicle. I have since learned that a recall was issued due to this exact problem but my VIN was not included in the recall, even though it is the year make and model associated with this very problem. …
The contact owns a 2015 BMW 328D. The contact stated that while driving 15-25 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine, and the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact was unsure if any warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a BMW-Authorized mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel pump had failed, and there were metal shavings found in the fuel. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V586000 (FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 150,000.
I was driving on a busy two lane road. The vehicle instantly decelerated and made a large thump while driving at 55mph. The vehicle information system said there was a drivetrain malfunction, and all power was instantly gone. We were able to quickly pull off onto a small section off the road, but not in a safe manner, almost going into the ditch, in which I strongly was anticipating was going to be a total loss to the car as an accident and Injury to myself and my wife. The vehicle then after waiting several hours was towed to a certified BMW shop to be looked at. The shop noted that it sounded like it was a high pressure fuel pump failure that caused the car to abruptly decelerate. The shop confirmed that the high pressure fuel pump did fail and with high probability took out all components associated with the fuel system. …
