Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

I was travelling along the road when 3 cars suddenly hit the brakes really hard. I was able to hit my brakes fast, but I did not feel any pressure on the pedal and I was unable to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I also had a problem with the start system. I was randomly unable to start the car (about 3 times.) I would have to wait 10 minutes or longer for the car to be able to start again. I also noticed that the front bumper frame of my car was split in half (as if I had hit a post or something big.) I also noticed that there was writting on the front bumper frame (no foam padding in between,) and the following written on the front (DNR. 01/09/2017 and a time 10:20.) I don't know what's going on with my vehicle. It's frustrating and I've had to take it to the dealership a few time 3 hours away.

Oct 2021 · crash

The brake by wire system failed, and another component caused the vehicle to accelerate when I hit the brake pedal. I didn't have any proof on the last complaint, but I have it now. This brake failure caused me to rear end someone, which caused a multiple vehicle accident. The dealership I took it to was aware that I was having electrical issues with the car, but they said they couldn't do anything about it because they couldn't find any fault codes. I even sent them a video of it as well. I also believe this car was involved in a prior accident as well by one of the previous owners and fixed by one of them under the table, because the front bumper shock absorber plate broke in half, and had writing on it as well that looked like something a repair shop would do. This car is unsafe.

On September 23, 2026, I took my vehicle to RON TONKIN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM FIAT (ALFA ROMEO) for an official manufacturer recall 93C service regarding the fuel pump. Immediately upon receiving the vehicle back from the dealership after the recall procedure, two major electrical failures occurred: 1. Complete failure of all exterior turn signals (blinkers do not respond at all). 2. Complete blackout of the central infotainment / dash display screen. Before this recall service, both systems were fully functional with zero issues. Turn signals are a mandatory, critical road safety component. Operating a vehicle without functional turn signals poses an extreme safety hazard to myself, passengers, and other drivers on the road, rendering the vehicle unroadworthy. …

Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a serious safety incident involving my vehicle. On [redacted] at approximately [redacted], while driving to an extracurricular activity for my [redacted] child, my vehicle displayed the following warning messages: "Service Engine," "Service Electronic Throttle Control," and "Start/Stop Unavailable." Immediately after these warnings appeared, the vehicle shut off and shifted into neutral. I lost the ability to steer, creating a highly dangerous situation. I was on a busy road approaching an interstate entrance and had to react quickly to avoid a potential accident. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver the vehicle safely to the side of the road, but I believe this malfunction presents a serious risk to public safety and should be investigated. Please let me know if additional information or documentation is needed.

My Alfa Romeo only has 29,000 miles on it. It randomly dies on you and does not start. Might happen while you drive with the start/stop and also when you try to turn on the car. When speaking to an Alfa Romeo representative, they inform you that to fix it's about $600 or higher and they are also aware that is a common problems with their cars. The representative informed me that to turn it back on, I have to disconnect the a wire on top of the battery. I'm not a mechanic and should not have to work with the electrical system of the car. After reconnecting that wire, there's the electric stability control light that turns on and the steering wheel assist light turns on. It's crazy that this is a know issue with these cars and the dealers try everything they can to charge you for that repair. Which makes the car completely unsafe.

This has been an issue slowly getting worse over the last few months and escalated this week. June 20th, 2025 my car has literary died over (4) times during traffic and I had to try and stay calm while using a code reader to clear the codes to get the engine to start. Very scary, I have a 2017 Giulia Ti that just hit 100k miles. Even took it to the dealership and they couldn't explain it.
