Owner reports
Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).
1. Rack & pinion failure, 2. Serpentine belt tensioner failure (@approx 45000 mi) 3. L rr seatbelt installed twisted at factory- shoulder strap wouldn't lock for child safetyseat, dealer fixed. 4. Warped front rotors, 5. I have experienced the dash going haywire or completely out accompanied by the sensation of a slipping trans and sluggish/clunking steering (twice, once about 8 months ago and about a week before the r&p failure) 6. Two tires have had belt separation.
I had a sidewall blow out with a three week old dunlop tire while merging on to an on ramp at 40 miles per hour. The tire lost pressure immediately and caused temporary loss of control of the car. The weather was only and 30 degrees, and I openly had myself and empty trunk car. The tires were purchased at an authorized Goodyear dealer and installed with a set of equally sized four tires. Corporate and retail Goodyear people will only replace the tire if they can be proved that it was defect in the manufacturing of the tire, not with installation or any other charaterisitics. The prevoius tire on that rim was a Goodyear tire that lasted 45000 miles without incident, so rim damage appear to be not likely.
Tl contact owns a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. While making a turn at 5 MPH, the wheel detached from the vehicle. Since that time, whenever the wheel is turned to the left, the vehicle lifts up. The contact discovered NHTSA campaign id number 03V527000 (steering:rack and pinion) for the same symptoms she was experiencing with her vehicle. The manufacturer has not been notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 160,000.
Vehicle had ongoing problem when the steering wheel was turned there was severe grinding and knocking noise that could be felt all the way to the floor. Dealership indicated that this was normal characteristic of the steering rack and pinion. Alloy wheels on vehicle began to peel causing tire to loose air replaced on 8/10/04 at a cost of 313.00.
Purchased (4) summit radial trac plus high performance tires. Had (2) tires fail within (2) months with less than (2,000) miles. Both tires had identical blowouts in a radial direction. The tires were properly inflated & had no puncture marks.
Computer would not allow car to start. Paint chipping on all fender edges. Constant flat tires, one near wreck on freeway due to leaking rims that mechanic says should never be driven in the winter becasue the rims will not hold up to the weather.
During a safety check/tire balance prior to an extended roadtrip, my mechanic found all four tires were suffering tread seperation. The two in the rear had 4 to 6" splits in the inside sidewalls, and both front tires had broken belts, forcing me to purchase a new set. Also, according to the mechanic, two of the tires had plugs, although I am the only driver and have never had a flat with this car. The tires were properly maintained and balanced since new. The tire dealer marked the tires to be returned to Goodyear for possible adjustment, but Goodyear has not responded. I do not have any of the requested tire information since I do not have the tires. They were original equipment on my 1998 olds Intrigue.( dot number: )
Olds crome plated the orignal stock alum. Wheels making the wheels thicker, thus the wheels throw off the weights and not the wheels are pealing inside. If the weights are forced down it breakes the tire beed causing a flat. All the Intrigue's with crome aluminum wheels are affected I have taken pictures of the autos on different lots and all are the same. I went to 5 different places to balance these wheels to no avail, and am on my third set of tires.
Consumer states when engine is started and backing out movement, consumer hears a click in the front brakes. When driving no problem,. Dealer contacted, and stated this was a factory design flaw. Problem still exists. *akthe click is becoming more & more noticeable after you move forward or backward, consumer also stated that transmission feels like it clunks when shifting from reverse to drive, also power steering was replaced.
Goodyear regatta 225/65r16 sidewall failures - four tires of this brand have failed on our 1998 olds Intrigue. Three are from a replacement set purchased around 2002, and one of the pro-rata warranty replacements just failed. The first three were full-on blowouts at low speeds without hitting any bumps and the most recent was multiple large bulges in the sidewall and a flat tire developed while driving at 70 MPH.
