What owners report

Our 2013 Mazda5 minivan have the toyo a20 all-season radial tire. Two of the four tires have the tread separating from the sidewall along the inside and outside of the tire. There is actually a line around the circumference of the tire. We had to be just a few miles from complete and catastrophic failure of two tires. The tires have 38,000 miles on them. I have heard a thump sound for the past several months and have checked the tires often but never noticed anything. I would have to wonder if the separation was only apparent while the tire was spinning and closed up when stopped until it finally began pulling apart. I have kept the two tires that have separated as well as the two that have not yet shown failure. I would like to turn them over for safety testing. These tires should not be on our nations highways.

Sentury Touring (Discount Tire) 205/55/R16. Both front tires have inner wear to the point of shredding in the same location on *both* front tires. Both tires went out at the same time and could have caused a serious accident. Discount tire stated it was an alignment issue. The alignment shop (30 minutes after new tires were installed after dual blowout) stated that my alignment was perfectly within spec and also stated there was no indication of tire rub on any portion of the vehicle.

After purchasing the vehicle I noticed from day one, there was something wrong in the rear tires for brake assembly. Each time I'd visit the shop I was told everything was fine. I believe somewhere around 12,000 miles I noticed the tires were getting bald. They check the alignments shortly after the car was purchased and said everything was fine. Later I had another alignment done because the vehicle seem to pull more to the left. They said it was a little bit out of alignment but everything was okay. When I questioned him on the tires which by the way I had to replace one while on the trip. Their reply with the same these are cheap tires put on by the manufacturer and should not last anymore 12,000 miles. After getting nowhere I finally went to tire kingdom and replaced all four tires at my cost. …

Corroded tire pressure sensor caused sudden loss of air and tire "exploded" while driving on freeway at highway speed. No potholes, obstructions or other impediments to cause loss of tire pressure. Result was a very dangerous situation requiring driver to cross three lanes of traffic to reach shoulder. Tire was "shredded" nearly around entire circumference, and rubber crumbled. Dealership tech said probable cause was corrosion of tire pressure sensor. Tire pressure sensor was original equipment on vehicle.

The tire pressure sensor illuminated and I checked to see if the tire was flat. It was not. I drove to a filling station to top off the pressure and as I was driving away from the air pump the valve stem to the rear driver side tire broke and the tire deflated instantly. The valve stem was corroded. Apparently it was initially cracked slightly causing the tire to first lose air slowly. Then, upon manipulation from the pump fitting, the stem was further damaged causing the stem to break off. I did have this happen once before. The explanation from a service station was the same. In this model the valve stem and pressure sensor is a single assembly so when the tire is changed the valve stem is not changed even if it is old and showing signs of aging. Otherwise the cost of replacing a tire would be nearly doubled. The sensor itself will last much longer than its valve stem. …

I have had 2 tire pressure monitoring valves break into 2 parts each in the past 4 months. The latest was when I was driving today on city streets. The tire pressure alarm went off so I stopped the car to check the tires. When I touched one of the valves it just came apart in my hand and I was holding part of the valve, the rest of it was still in the tire. The tire then completely deflated in about 2 seconds. This could be extremely hazardous. If you lost all tire pressure in a few seconds at 65 MPH you could easily lose control of the car and get in an accident. I no longer trust the 2 valves that have yet to break so I am going to be proactive and replace them before they do break at an inopportune time. I see a lot of other complaints about the same problem on the internet. I included a picture of the piece of the valve that broke off into my hand.
