What owners report

Tl contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The contact noticed fuel leaking from the fuel tank. In the presence of an ignition source, the vehicle could have caught fire. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the fuel line disengaged from the fuel pump. The fuel line was reconnected. In addition, the traction control would sporadically engage. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that there was a faulty connection to the throttle body. Also, he experiences difficulty when attempting to remove the key from the ignition. The SRS warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. A technician stated that the SRS module needed to be replaced. Lastly, the heater cooler was replaced due to a persistent burning odor emanating from the vehicle. …

Replaced thermostat due to coolant leakage. Service engine soon light keeps coming on and car looses power and shakes violently. Have had to pull over numerous times and shut engine down and leave for a few minutes, service engine soon light stays illuminated. Now tc (traction control) and downhill decent light keep coming on. Took to repair shop and they replaced brake light switch, but lights illuminated while on their final test drive. They told me everything was fine, it could be a wiring issue with the harness and would need to schedule time to investigate. I left the shop and drove 1.5hrs home only to have my husband follow me in the car while I had our 3yr old child with me and tell me the brake lights aren't working at all! When is enough to do something about these unsafe vehicles??? We have also just changed brake discs/rotors and pads for the 3rd time at 87,000 miles.

2004 Freelander · 88,000 miles · Jun 2010

F-4 flashing on the odometer, both check engine lights on, and the hill descent/traction control lights coming on. Vehicle quickly dropped power to no power. Service engine soon light and car lost power while driving, something with the throttle was repaired the first time. Then the harness was repaired and two weeks later the vehicle is doing the same thing again. Mechanical problems continue now going on the 4th trip to the auto mechanic shop. There is no warranty left. Maybe there is something to be done. It is obvious that I am not the only one having the same problem and yet nothing has been done to correct any situation. I will never purchase another landrover in any model and will let anyone that is interested in purchasing a landrover of any model that they are not worth buying due to all the mechanical problems that knowingly seem to occur over and over. …

2003 Freelander · 77,000 miles · Feb 2012

Purchased the truck in 2003 from Land Rover, brand new. Dealt with a few recalls and other issues ( sun roof was off track, did not work. Leather seats had deformations on seats. Truck need an acid wash for spots that developed on bumper) soon my engine and coolant issues occurred. Why driving id notice my truck start to overheat. This was even after being serviced at Land Rover. Come to find out my coolant was leaking. The issue continued to the point where I had to get new external parts ( thermostat, water pipe, expansion tank) this helped but not for long. My truck continued to overheat and leak, o the point I had to replace the cylinder head gasket and the timing belt.. I accumulated only 56,000 miles over 9 years of driving this truck and spent +$20,000 trying to save it ... I see why this model was discontinued after only one year. …

My sons 2002 Land Rover Freelander caught fire on September 29, 2010 at 4:00 am. The vehicle had been parked since 11:00 pm the previous evening. At 4:00 am my son heard his alarms in the car going off and rushed to see what was going on to find the interior of the car was on fire. He tried to slap the fire out with his hands and received 3rd degree burns due to this. He then ran inside and retrieved a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. The fire was contained, but the damage was so severe, the vehicle was declared a total loss. The fire started in the wiring system under the steering column. We do have a case open with Land Rover, but their representative stated this is only for their internal use and no compensation would be made. …

The car was purchased new in 2002. With only 23,000 miles, the vehicle has been out of service for 43 days with catastrophic mechanical failures, including: 21 days for a new wiring harness; 3 days for a new gearshift assembly and 8 days for a new transmission and ECU and front brakes. Additionally, the vehicle has been in the shop 8 times for warranty repairs; and brakes. The vehicle is currently in the shop where it was been for the last 11 days with the dealer once again trying to resolve warning light and transmission issue. I have had problems with the vehicle shifting to lower gears by itself at freeway speeds. In addition all of the on-board failure lights coming on and stay on routinely. The car continues to be plagued by electrical/mechanical problems. …
