Owner reports

Selected complaints filed with NHTSA by 1995 Eagle Talon owners, lightly cleaned up (personal details are redacted by NHTSA).

I bought the vehicle new in February of 1995, thirteen months after buying the vehicle the timing belt snapped. The engine was essentially replaced. Three months later the water pump failed and was replaced, it failed again and was replaced again. The vents on the dashboard popped out and had to be replaced, they have since popped out again. The horn relay has been replaced twice and still does not function properly. The brakes were resurfaced after about 4 months because of a defect. The alarm has been replaced three times. The battery has been replaced twice. All of these problems occured in the first three years I owned the vehicle. In the past four months I have noticed a very strong odor of fuel in the car, I have brought it to several mechanics, without success. …

I would just like to say that I have had more problems than anyone could imagine with this car. It has been in the shop over 20 times. I have had the starter replaced, water pump, altenator, brake pads replaced twice and the rotors for warping as well as one of the calipers. I have also had more than 4 batteries gone out a host of electrical problems from the door locks burning out and being replaced at least twice the intrument cluster lights going out. I have also had to have the drive splines(not sure of the spelling) replaced due to cracking and braking problems with them. The valve taplets have been replaced due to a leaking down of all 16 of them, the exhaust mainfold was just replaced for a warping that cracked it and was causing exhaust to escape into the engine compartment. The dash has been replaced for cracking. Then taking back out for a mess up. …

Morning of incident, on the way to work noticed speedometer wasn't working. Coming back from lunch, smelled odor. Pulled over, popped hood, saw small fire left side, and put out with fire extinguisher. Towed to dealer, they made OEM spec. Repair, replacing damaged compoents. I have old speed sensor, it looks to me the most likely source of the problem. My concern is this can happen again. I believe the speed sensor circuit should be fused. I am in the process of pursuing this concern with damlierchrysler (bob dunn, [phone]). Fyi, state farm is not covering most the damage cost (~$850), claiming the defective component (comprehensive doesn't cover the defective part, but other parts damaged in fire) to be the wiring harness, the big ticket item, and not the speed sensor. So for 2 reasons I really want to determine the actual cause of the fire. Fyi, the original/bad sensor. …

The consumer heard a loud noise and found large amounts of nuts and bolts rolling back and forth on both panels in the trunk. Both panels were replaced in the rear seat area. The engine stalled, there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust badly. The chain bolt valve, timing cover, timing belt, timing chain/belt, the balance shaft bolt, and the front and rear struts were replaced. A new oil pan was placed in the vehicle. The vehicle idled abnormally and lost power. The vehicle needed a new battery, and a left front headlight assembly. There was a knocking issue when going over bumps. Mr scc

This car has many failing parts, minor & major, we don't think its normal. The electrical problems have been ongoing since shortly after auto was purchased by use (12/99). Our out-of-pocket expenses thus far approx. $2300.00. This car seems to be a big lemon! Any information would be most welcome. Thank you.

Consumer had replaced the battery and was told that the computer takes 45 minutes to reconfigure the right idle speed and in between this time at the normal speed of 40mph when coming to a stop, the vehicle shuts off. Dealer has been contacted.

The battery only last 1 year. The computer gets wet inside somehow and shorts out, this is very common on these cars. I have spoken to a few others and they have the same problem. There is a seal or something that is not I place.
